A Brief History of Tahitian Pearls

Tahitian pearls, also known as black pearls are the most exotic and sought after gemstones in the market today. Because they are usually dark colored precious stones also called black pearls, although the color can vary from gray to the color of gunmetal silver and exotic, including many of the white chocolate, the baroque and even a peacock green. This elusive and unique pearl first cultivated in 1961 by Jean-Marie Dormand, a French marine resource managers in French Polynesia.

Cultivation experiments first occurred in the atoll lagoon and Bora Bora, French Polynesia Hikueru. This causes the first crop in 1965 which resulted in more than 1000 black pearl. Not the first black pearl exports until 1972, but soon the secret was out and in 1996 more than 152 million dollar black diamond is being transported out of French Polynesia. Oddly enough, this pearl is not harvested in Tahiti, but is rich in coral islands that make up French Polynesia.

With a rich luster, nacre pearl shiny and smooth, clean Tahiti are perfect for pendants, necklaces, earrings and other jewelry. Because demand for discovery of rare stones, including pearls of Tahiti, has been steadily increasing each year and forced conservation in the waters of French Polynesia abundant to allow stocking of oyster bed. When the settlers in several sites found the pearl in 1700 from the main crop is dry faster because the dramatic demand for exotic jewelry.

Tahitian pearls come from the black-lipped oyster known as Pinctada Margaritifera. Oysters are very small and lasted only a few cultivation process and produce better gem. This is more rare than the other Tahitian pearl jewelry including Akoya highly sought after and varieties from the South Sea.
